This past Sunday was World Teachers Day, a UNESCO celebration with partners from UNICEF, Education International and the International Labour Organization. UNESCO recognizes teachers as the most powerful force for equity and the promise for a better standing in life. However, currently there is a huge shortage of teaching professionals with quality training to guide new generations of children to a better life. Too often, teachers where they are most needed are under-qualified, poorly paid and have low statuses. World Teacher Day is to bring awareness to the great contribution that teachers give to enrich and better our world. The UN calls on this Teacher’s Day for the world to invest more into teachers. According to UNESCO, another 1.4 million teachers are needed to achieve universal primary education by 2015.

There are those great teachers we all remember from our primary and high school days, and most students will have common fond memories of one very special teacher who made learning more fun, or really made them see the world differently. Here are a few of the greatest on-screen teachers:

  • Mr. Feeney, Boy Meets World
  • Ms. Frizzle, The Magic School Bus
  • Ms. McGonagall, Harry Potter
  • Sean McGuire (played by Robin Williams), Good Will Hunting
  • Ms. Norbury (played by Tina Fey), Mean Girls
