Earlier this week, the New York State Education Department released some of the questions from this year’s third-grade standardized tests. The New York Times reported that this exam is considered to be the most challenging standardized test in the US. In fact, many parents of students who have taken the Common Core test have described its questions as “puzzling” and “poorly written.” Others have had their children opt out of taking the tests altogether.

New York’s Common Core tests are typically some of the toughest in the entire country, if their pass rates serve as an indication. For instance, last year, a mere 31 per cent of students passed the reading tests and only 36 per cent passed the math exams. After reading some of the test questions for ourselves, we expect this year’s tests to show similar results.
