It was a proud moment for students and teachers of Mount Royal University ‘s Midwifery bachelor’s degree program. Eight students walked across the stage to receive Alberta’s only Bachelor of Midwifery degree—a much needed step forward for Alberta healthcare.

Midwives are becoming a popular option for today’s mothers. No longer do people want to deliver their babies in a sterile hospital. Midwives allow mothers to give birth in the comfort of their homes. That being said, last year there were only 80 midwives working in Alberta—certainly not enough to provide care for the 56,000 mothers who gave birth last year in the province.

The Mount Royal University Midwifery program will no doubt lead the way to more bachelor’s degrees for this profession in upcoming years.

Students can undergo Bachelor’s of Midwifery degrees at Ryerson University, McMaster University, UBC, and Laurentian University, and of course, Mount Royal University.
