Many universities have an artist or writer-in-residence during a period on the year. The writer-in-residence position allows writers to pursue their craft in the education environment of a university. Usually these writers will speak with students, share their expertise, and offer advice. Sometimes, they will offer to perform readings of their work, book signing and even prepare special lectures.

The University of Windsor was lucky to snap graphic novelist and artists Scott Chantler as this years’ writer-in-residence. Chantler is the author of two award winning works including The Northwest Passage and Two Generals. He is also the author of the acclaimed children’s comic series Three Thieves

Many now famous Canadian writers grew their career by being writers-in-residence at a Canadian university. Writers among the likes of Fred Wah, Maria Campbell and Judy Fong Bates have started off their early careers as resident writers at universities.
