To keep communities safe and protected, there is a need for skilled professionals to assume various roles in policing as well as private security. Herzing College offers a one year Police Foundations diploma which includes a practical internship in security to gain valuable work experience and get a feel for what it’s like to be on duty.
A career in policing and security is about working to ensure public safety through crime prevention tactics and law enforcement, aiming to deescalate situations before they get out of control. Police and security work demands individuals who are even-tempered, physically fit and able to mediate conflict.
The Police Foundations diploma program at Herzing College is an exceptionally thorough preparatory course that provides students with all of the skills needed to embark on a rewarding career as a police officer, security guard, customs official, border patrol guard and more. The program features a firearms safety course, and a restricted firearms safety course, making it one of the few programs in Canada to offer comprehensive firearms training. It expertly prepares students to apply for their Possession and Acquisition License, provided they pass the security screening process.
Involved in the program are a series of guest speeches that have included the RCMP, Toronto Homicide, Ministry of Natural Resources, Canadian Armed Forces and the Canadian Border Agency.
Students can expect to learn course content such as:
- Fitness and lifestyle management
- Psychology, sociology and criminology
- Social welfare and conflict management
- Federal and provincial statutes
- Young offenders act
- Interrogation skills
- Patrol procedures
- Traffic and accident management
- And much more!
Students will also have the opportunity to participate in an 80 hour internship that will provide them with exceptional hands-on training that will mimic the real world of law enforcement and security.
Through an agreement with Herzing University in the United States, graduates of this program can transfer part of their credits to Herzing University in the United States and finish their associate degree at a U.S. campus, online from Canada, or a combination of both.
