With a whole generation, the baby boomers, now retiring or planning to within the next few years, jobs in the medical field have been predicted to increase dramatically over the next 20-25 years. Not only are more people approaching the age where they need more care, but people who are in healthcare roles will also be retiring.
There is a growing need for skilled individuals to occupy positions in medical office administration – fulfilling an integral role in the healthcare industry by ensuring the smooth operation of clinics by performing administrative and clerical tasks.
The Medical Office Administrator diploma program at Herzing College is 10-month college diploma includes a 7-week internship to gain practical, hands-on work experience.
The duties of medical office administrators vary from office to office, depending on the location and size of the office, and the specialty, but some of the skills you’ll learn during the 10 month program are:
- Controlling patient flow
- Enrolling patients in the database
- Filing and updating medical records
- Liaising with insurance companies
- Insurance billing
- Scheduling appointments and seminars
- Arranging specialist visits
- Arranging laboratory tests
- And much more!
Students will become acquainted with a variety of different software programs, including Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access, Outlook, and Publisher. Students will also learn how to do Ontario Health Insurance Plan (OHIP) and private insurance billing using AbelMED software. There is also a heavy focus on fast and accurate typing, ensuring that students are prepared to work in the fast-paced world of medical transcribing if they so choose.
Through an agreement with Herzing University in the United States, graduates of this program can transfer part of their credits to Herzing University in the United States and finish their associate degree at a U.S. campus, online from Canada, or a combination of both.
