An Automotive Refinishing Prep or Auto Body Technician has their focus on the outside of the vehicle. Whether old fashioned steel, fibre class or the more recent inclusion of carbon fibre, the auto body is designed and maintained in a fashion that is both decorative and protects the vehicle and its occupants. Sometimes it also serves to enhance the performance of the vehicle, with aerodynamic designs to reduce drag, and the body of cars and trucks is generally made as light as possible for better fuel economy.
The challenge with all automotive refinishing, whether a post collision repair, patching up normal rust damage or a cosmetic paint job, is maintaining a smooth finish. This means sanding and the use of special paints, generally applied with an airbrush. Skilled automotive painters can be quite reactive, and in addition to normal car maintenance, there is a demand for visual upgrades.
