The New World Of Online Video Series

Traditionally, filmmakers have only had two outlets: film and television. Both film and television are incredibly difficult industries to penetrate, often requiring you to either work your way up or to just luck out with an independent project. And even independent projects require a large amount of financing. However, in the last few years, a new avenue has opened up for filmmakers – the Internet. The use of the Internet as a cheap way to share content with a large audience has led to the growth of numerous online video series that are only increasing in popularity.

There are a number of reasons why online video series are becoming more and more popular. One of the main factors that led to this is the fact that technology increased to the point where uploading and watching videos could be done from the most basic computer setup. Video technology has progressed so much that people can easily watch full-length films streaming on their phones. This has led to a larger audience base looking for content to watch on their computers and phones, leading to more filmmakers providing that content. According to a number of studies, there will be roughly three billion users online by 2015 as well as two times as many devices connected online. Because of this, Internet traffic will multiply times four and online video will increase sevenfold.

This is an incredible opportunity for filmmakers for a number of reasons. First of all, they have an incredibly cheap platform to release their work onto. They no longer have to worry about distribution, since they can simply upload work onto their website or onto streaming sites. Filmmakers are also drifting towards video series because it allows them more flexibility to tell their stories. Not to mention that content presented in an episodic nature will continuously attract the same viewers that are looking to follow along with the story. Production values are not expected to be sky high as they are in the film and television world either. A filmmaker with a good story to tell can use a basic consumer camera to film a video series and simply upload it to their page. As long as the storytelling is interesting or they have something of value to offer the audience, it will be seen.

The Internet is a relatively new platform for filmmakers to work with, and it provides them with much more flexibility to share their work with the world than they would have with film and television. Not just amateur filmmakers are taking advantage of this platform either, students who are taking film production programs or audio engineering courses as well as professional filmmakers are experimenting with online video series as a new way to express themselves.
