Why Should You Study Abroad ?
Career Path : Career
There’s nothing quite like immersing yourself in another culture to broaden your horizons and build life-long memories. If you’re considering studying abroad, but aren’t quite sure if it’s the right choice for you, consider these top five reasons and you’ll be glad you did.
1 – You’ll Make Lifelong Friends From All Over the World
College is a great time to meet new friends, and in fact many people make lifelong friends during their college years. However, studying abroad gives you a unique opportunity to make friends with people who have vastly different backgrounds. It’s a fascinating experience to find the common ground between you and someone who comes from an entirely different country and culture. These bonds you form will last for life.
2 – You Can Immerse Yourself in a Language in a Way that Will Have a Lifetime Impact
Many people take years of foreign language classes and can barely have a simple conversation in their second language, while those who study abroad can pick up the necessary conversational skills in a matter of weeks. When you are totally immersed in a language, you can learn it much more quickly than you’d imagine. Of course, having courses in the language of the country you plan to visit is helpful, but you’ll be surprised by how quickly you begin to learn the language.
3 – It’s a Great Line to Have on a Resume
Depending on what field you intend to dive into once you’ve graduated, you may find that a semester of studying in another country could be hugely helpful on your resume. It shows potential employers that you’re not afraid to try something new, that you’ve learned about other cultures and other countries, and it could directly relate to the job for which you’re applying.
4 – Learn About Yourself and Build Confidence
Many people have truly transformative experiences when they study abroad, from learning that they are in fact capable of getting by on their own, to discovering that they do in fact have the confidence to make new friends in a language they’re not totally comfortable with. It can be a wonderful experience to build confidence and the courage to take on what life requires once you’re out of school.
5 – Because You Can!
Traveling to another country when you’re young and have fewer responsibilities is the best time to do so. If you don’t do it now, you aren’t likely to do it later. Many people believe they can’t afford to do so, but there are many travel bursaries and study abroad scholarships that can make it more affordable than you might imagine. Apply for as many study abroad scholarships as you qualify for, and you may be surprised by how much help is available to you.
