As many people now spend more time surfing the internet than sleeping, than anything really, good website design is becoming more intuitive and important. Nobody has time to look at cluttered or ugly websites. The trend towards simplified web design has been gaining momentum for years now but more than ever, busy pages with tiny fonts and the old trend of skeuomorphism (applications designed to look like their real-world counterpart) aren’t going to cut it. The trend behind this trend is responsive design, enabling mobile browsing devices to effectively access the same content as hulking desktop screens. Even in 2011, research indicated that 28% of Americans went online mostly using their phones, and a quick look at city streets with pedestrians’ eyes locked on tiny handheld screens will reveal that figure has likely skyrocketed since then.


One Page Websites

Websites absolutely need to work on a variety of devices to compete today and for small screens to be functional, content must be presented prominently, as clearly as possible. The landing page is make or break for engaging users and one page websites are increasingly popular to simplify the user experience. These sites will use big, blocky typography with original images and lots of clean space to draw folks in, with the bulk of the content below the fold, infinitely scrollable. This way, first impressions are an appealingly uncluttered site with easily digestible pieces placed below in a way that keep the viewer continuing to read.


One Message

If you had one message to convey, what would it be? The answer should be the front and centre on any landing page with design features existing only to focus attentions there. Titles and headlines are quickly noticed as a general overview of the site’s offerings. Web copy should be sufficiently captivating to encourage further investigation of the rest of the website. It is impractical to expect visitors to endure flashy ads, info videos, sign ups or anything that will take more than a second to get what they’re looking for.


Flat Design

One of the top trends making the rounds in web design courses is flat web design. This uses solid colours without drop shadows, gradients and textures to focus on typography, minimalistic interfaces and colour contrast. Ease of functionality is clearly the benefit while it is also easier to make these designs responsive. Font sizes are increasing, often in front of large, high-resolution photograph backgrounds, for elegance and easy navigability.


User Friendliness

Fixing navigation bars on the top of websites keeps the main links accessible at all times, encouraging more clicks from people digging deeper into the content. This can be done without JavaScript, using CSS. Using big icon designs allows users to easily skim features or read the details. User friendliness is the priority for all web and IT courses – landing pages need to convert casual viewers to return visitors by delivering key content in a way that can be easily digested.
