Pursuing a career in sales management will require the ultimate “sales strategy,” in that you’ll be promoting yourself. As a salesperson, you know how to sell products or services, but how do you sell yourself and convince your own manager that you’re ready for promotion? Here’s how:

Talk to your manager

Make it known that you’re ready to be promoted, but go easy. Don’t demand a promotion. Instead, make it clear that you are ready to be promoted and then follow up with action (below).

Negotiate with your manager for more sales training

If you want to become a manager, you need skills you don’t yet have if you’ve only had field sales training. In essence, your goal is to have your manager become your mentor (or to have him or put you in touch with someone who can be) and will teach you the new skills you need for management.

Determine needed skills that you don’t yet have

Ask your manager for advice on attaining the managerial skills you don’t yet have in your portfolio. What’s missing in your work experience? Are there seminars or courses you can take that will put you on track toward a managerial position? Your manager or related personnel should be happy to tell you what you need to do to move up. If you need more sales training in that you’ve just gotten started in the field and need to gain more experience before you can move into a managerial role, great. If you have enough on-the-job experience in sales for the company and need some specialized training to become a manager, your own manager should be able to point you to the proper resources. In short, you’ll need to determine what you need to do to become a manager, and then work toward that goal.

Make your ambition known and then follow through

No one is successful in sales without sales training, to be sure, but you also have to have a sales strategy for yourself, as stated before. Once you’ve stated your goal and your employer knows about it, it’s time to get to work. Don’t just sit around expecting to be promoted. Instead, become the best salesperson you can be, meeting and exceeding goals you set for yourself on a monthly basis. In addition, use your spare time to get the extra sales training you need for promotion – whether it’s taking a seminar or reading everything you can get your hands on that will teach you what you need to know.

The key point to all this, of course, is to be seen as someone who takes the initiative, someone who wants to advance, and someone who’s worth promoting. When you can do that, you’ll be shoo-in in for that next promotion.
