Building information modeling, or BIM, is a next-generation development of CAD. A BIM model consists of depictions of components used in a building’s construction. This trend is expected to continue.
Cloud computing has ushered in a brave new world. This might sound like something out of a science fiction novel, but it’s science fact. A Hungarian company has developed a technology that enables individuals to create in 3D. By wearing imaging glasses and using a specially-designed stylus dubbed the “bird,” the designer works in a virtual reality workspace. Three infrared sensors positioned around the area follow both the glasses, which contain built-in LEDs, and the bird. The result is a 3D image that is limited only by the designer’s imagination.
Governments will become involved as computer aided design continues to branch into all these new directions. This can be a good thing, as patents, trademarks, and copyrights for new devices and technologies need to be protected. However, government involvement can be expected to extend beyond this protection.
This is an exciting time in the vibrant field of computer aided design. As current technologies undergo changes, and new methods are developed, innovative engineering training programs will fill the need for talented design professionals.
