Curious about the typical Canadian car buyer? A lot has changed in car sales and leasing. While car sales and leasing typically takes place in the same franchise and independent dealerships, people are relying on more than friends, family and ads when they make their choices. According to this blog post from Automotive Training Centre, customers research their purchases extensively and demand consultative sales techniques geared at teaching them everything they need to know about the car itself. One other thing is breaking the stereotype when it comes to the average car buyer and who will be signing off on that car loan:

“…reflecting the changing demographics in employment and purchasing power, women are now both the leading car buyers and the leading spenders in annual automotive sales.

Another factor that’s changed is the roles of the internet in helping consumers make choices. While in the past, the biggest influence on purchases outside the car lot was friends and family, these days an increasingly connected customer is turning to online reviews to help them discover and compare not just the features of the cars they are thinking of buying, but also to give them a better understanding of price.
