No matter what industry you will be working in, there are six skills you need to develop which will appeal to every office manager.
Strong Communication Skills
Whether you’re an introvert who gets nervous around people, or an extrovert who has a difficult time knowing when to stop talking, you’re going to want to spend some time honing your communication skills. You need to learn how to listen as well as how to talk in a professional manner. You’ll also need to master professional business correspondences, although these days that’s mostly email.
Even though you might not be in charge of managing the entire office, you still need to be able to keep the things that pertain directly to you neat and organized. Good organizational skills make it possible for you to do your job efficiently.
Office managers already have a great deal on their plate. They don’t have time to deal with every little problem that pops up during the average day. By honing your conflict resolution skills, you will be able to handle the little things like irritable co-workers and customer service problems on your own. Individuals who are skilled at resolving conflicts usually get promoted.
The Ability to Adapt
Even though the average day in the office seems to be doing the same thing over and over again, there will be times when things will also seem vastly different. By teaching yourself to be adaptable, you’ll be able to roll with the punches and keep everything controlled. Being adaptable will also be something your bosses notice and could lead to a promotion.
Learn Some Bookkeeping
Even though bookkeeping might not be your dream job, it doesn’t hurt to take accounting courses. The day will come when you’ll be glad you did. No matter what job you ultimately get it’s likely that you’re going to have to do things like fill out expense reports, plan a budget, and other basic bookkeeping projects. Being able to tell a potential employer that you took accounting courses while you were in school means they won’t have to worry about training you, increase the odds of them hiring you instead of someone else.
Learn to Speak Computer
It’s unreasonable to think that you will be able to find any job that doesn’t require you to have at least a basic understanding of computer. It’s in your best interest to spend some time at IT schools where you can hone your computer skills. In addition to learning how to use several programs, the IT schools will also help you troubleshoot and handle basic computer repairs.
