5 (Healthy) Ways to Blow Off Steam While in IT Technician Training

Information technology courses are tough, but so is life in the workforce. Taking the time and effort to learn how to handle any feelings of overwhelm that arise while you are still in school for IT technician training will increase your resilience and prepare you for the challenges of the working world after graduation.

So, this semester in your information technology courses, instead of indulging in unhealthy coping mechanisms – a bag of chips, a six-pack of beer – use exam and assignment stress as an opportunity to experiment with healthier strategies. The sooner you start, the better.

1. Take a few minutes to listen to a song.

Like your associates in your information technology courses, you’ve been hunched over your laptop, holed up in the darkest corner of your house, every day for a week now. You haven’t even taken a break to eat a real meal in the past 24 hours. Out of pity, your roommate handed you a microwaved burrito on their way out to class. But in spite of working so hard, you just don’t seem to be getting anywhere in your assignment. What you need is perspective. Take a few minutes off to give yourself a break. Put down the computer. Turn on your favourite song. Sing along at the top of your lungs. Bust a move. When you return to your computer, you may just find that the answers that you were so desperate to find have come to you – as though by magic.

2. Take a walk.

There’s nothing like a little fresh air to get your creative juices flowing. Put your computer to sleep – it will be there for you when you get back – and head out for a little walk. A walk around the block will usually do the trick but a walk in nature can be even more effective. Notice how often your thoughts turn to IT technician training and remind yourself – as many times as you have to – that there is more to life than information technology courses.

3. Download a guided progressive muscle relaxation.

Use those Internet skills gleaned in IT technician training to do yourself some good: search the web for a guided progressive muscle relaxation that will help you relieve your body of all tension in just ten minutes, strengthening you to face the next round of assignments in your information technology courses.

4. Tidy up.

It may sound counterintuitive, but taking time away from your IT technician training to fold a pile of laundry or otherwise bring an outward semblance of order to your everyday life can be hugely helpful. Besides, remember that roommate who handed you a burrito? They’ll certainly appreciate you for it, and be that much more likely to support you the next time your information technology courses get tough.

5. Call a friend

If you are feeling disheartened by your information technology courses, it may be time to call a friend. It can be someone who has been there, done that, with IT technician training themselves, or just anyone who cares enough to listen.

So don’t despair. And don’t even think of reaching for that bag of chips. There are so many other ways to cope with stress – and the time to learn them is now, while you are still pursuing IT technician training.
