3 Tips for Hiring Hotel Staff

When it comes to the hotel industry, it’s all about reputation. The reputation a hotel receives from the visitors that stay there goes a long way towards gaining new customers. Because of this, hiring the staff of your hotel is one of the most important things you can do. From the kitchen staff to the staff that means your hotel’s service desk, each staff member affects the stay of every visitor. Poor performance from your staff can lead to a poor stay for a visitor, which in turn will lead to a sullied reputation for your hotel. The following are three tips that you should follow in order to hire the right staff for your hotel:

  1. Make sure that you do frequent and thorough background checks

Because your hotel’s reputation depends on the staff that you hire, it’s important to make sure that they clear extensive background testing. Not only are you entrusting your employees with cleaning the rooms of your guests, serving food to your guests and even interacting with them on a daily basis, but you also need to ensure the safety of your guests as well. You don’t want to hire someone who has a history that could harm your hotel’s reputation. For example, the last thing you want to do is hire someone who was fired from a hotel for his or her poor interaction with a guest. You should also check all the references on the applications you are given. Not only can you weed out potential employees who are unsuitable for your hotel, you could find some excellent employees via recommendations from other hotels.

  1. Provide your employees with opportunities for advancement

Because it can be difficult to retain staff in the hospitality business, you should do your best to offer opportunities for advancement. This will allow you to hold on to your best employees. Not to mention that it will give many of your employees incentives to do the best job possible. When looking to fill positions in your hotel, look to promote internally first. You can even reward staff members who go out of their way to take training classes during their free time, such as accounting training, by promoting them to the position they are working towards.

  1. Train your managers

One of the best ways to make sure your staff is working as hard as possible and providing the best services possible is by hiring good hotel managers. A good hotel manager needs to be able to communicate clearly and get along with staff members. Consider offering hotel management training to employees who want to work their way up.
